6 Tips for an Ultimate Backyard Makeover

Springtime isn’t too far in the distance and you know what that means. It’s time to start thinking about what you want your backyard to look like once the weather warms up!

Do you need a few ideas for your next backyard makeover?

There are so many options for an effective backyard setup, and depending on what your lifestyle is like, some may be more suitable for you than others.

Regardless of what you use your backyard for, we have something that will work for you. Keep reading for some of our favorite backyard makeover ideas so you can get started on your backyard transformation.

  1. Show Off Your Pride

Are you looking to show off something personal about yourself with your backyard decorations?

There are plenty of ways to go about this. You can use weather-resistant signs and tapestries, banners, and even flags.

People have flags for all kinds of reasons. Some like to show off their historical nations of origin, others like to show off qualities of themselves or movements that they support.

In the United States, it’s not uncommon for people to fly American flags in their front yards or backyards.

Flagpoles can seem intimidating. The ones that are used commercially are huge up close, it’s hard to conceptualize keeping one of those in your yard. There are, however, residential options that are easy to install and sturdy enough to support the average flag.

Check out this post for more info if you want to display a flag in your yard.

  1. Make a Native Garden

Do you have a green thumb?

Many of us use our backyards as a place to showcase our favorite flowers. The flowers bring color and charm to the yard, and many of them are great for bee and butterfly populations that are dropping by the minute.

Did you know that many of the plants that you’re using are actually invasive species?

While this isn’t such a big deal when they’re contained in a garden, they can be problematic if they spread. They also aren’t using your garden to its full potential.

Instead, why not plant a native garden? Each area has its own native flowers and grasses. Because they’re meant to be there, they’ll grow better even under less ideal conditions.

Scattering them in your flowerbed gives you an awesome wildflower look. Why not give it a try? Check out what kinds of plants are native to where you live and get started with your native garden.

  1. Bring the Indoors Outdoors

It’s growing more and more popular to have an outdoor space with indoor amenities. After all, during the warm seasons, it’s common to want to spend a lot of time outside with family, with a small party, or even relaxing alone with a book.

Make your outdoor space comfortable with a few things that seem to be better off indoors.

For example, there’s plenty of outdoor furniture that’s stylish enough to look like it would be right at home in your living room. Make sure the material is weather-resistant and keep it safe when it rains and you’ll have an awesome sitting area.

You don’t have to stop there. People often have a backyard fire pit, or even a full backyard fireplace, installed in the sitting area. Some people even have full kitchens!

Make your outdoor space as cozy as your indoor space.

  1. Create a Covered Space

Speaking of bringing the indoors outdoors, why not bring in the outdoors indoors?

You won’t be inside, but you will be safe and dry during rainy days while still getting to enjoy the outdoor space.

There are plenty of options. One of the most popular is a long overhang off of your porch. This is one of the most affordable and accessible options (and many homes come with them, either built-in or as a pre-existing addition).

You could also build a pergola in your yard for a place to sit amidst the garden.

On rainy days, you don’t have to stay inside. Sitting outside in your comfortable covered space is a great way to spend the time and get fresh air.

  1. Make a Backyard Oasis

Have you considered water features for your home?

There are plenty of ways to incorporate wear into your backyard makeover. The simplest is, of course, through bird feeders. Bird feeders are affordable and easy to install, and they give you the opportunity to get a good look at local wildlife.

You could also install a koi pond. Koi ponds add a great atmosphere to your outdoor spaces so long as you know how to take care of them the right way.

Small natural-looking ponds are also great. Pair them with gentle fountains for a “zen” feeling in your outdoor space.

A note: When you have standing water outdoors, make sure that you take measures to protect yourself from mosquitoes!

  1. Incorporate DIY Art

The backyard is the perfect place to show off your creative side. Why not make some DIY art to personalize your space?

There are plenty of great DIY options. You can create custom vertical gardens, upcycle old photo frames to hang around succulents, or even make your own DIY outdoor furniture for everyone to enjoy.

Here are a few great DIY outdoor art ideas available that will inspire you to make your own.

When Are You Starting Your Backyard Makeover?

Start your backyard makeover as soon as possible if you want a great backyard before spring rolls around.

Show off your pride, make yourself one with nature, or get in tune with your creative chops with one of these awesome outdoor design ideas.

The Face of All Seasons in the Business Today

The business industry around the world has faced its great challenge in the year 2020. From micro, small, medium to big enterprises, they felt the big impact of the effects of this pandemic. No one has been tagged as an excuse. All of us experienced the toughest time and journey of our business. As a matter of fact, many companies have fallen, wherein they close their operations. Some would consider themselves lucky because they are still operating even if profits are coming back to them. There are different stories of falling on their business in different parts of the world. But if there are sad stories, of course, there are stories that made us be inspired again to get back up and rise again.

Now, many rising businesses saw the needs of the market during this pandemic. They use the current situation to be creative and turn it into a business. Also, there are stories of businesses that have become better and greater than ever before. We would see how they stand up above all things amidst the inevitable circumstances in the business industry and society. In fact, no one would say that they are grateful for this difficult situation in our society. But we chose to see the brighter side of things. We stepped up the game and made sure that we came up with bigger and brighter ideas for our business.

But if there are stories of coming back, there are stories that needed to come to an end. The online retail store known as Lighting Lighting Lighting has been in the industry for many years already. In their years in the market, they have been known to be a great provider of different lightings. But because of this pandemic, they became honest and came up with a difficult and painful decision to turn off their lights. As we check their site, they extend their thankfulness to their avid customers who supported them throughout these years. They also provided their email for those who have placed their orders or have inquiries on their warranties. They ensure that their line is still open for their avid customers. In this way, they can even help them out with the concerns they might be having.

Now, they still stand up and ensure that they will yet provide their pending transactions to customers. Surely, they have been through the toughest times this 2020. No one has been excused, even the most successful businesses. Surely, they will come back and will become stronger. There is perfect timing for everything. Our season will arrive at the right time and place that we have not expected the most. If today is not our right time then we have to wait. As we wait for things to happen, we have to plan and work for it.

7 Expert Tips on How to Create a Basement Apartment

So, you’re finally ready to take the plunge. You’re ready to tackle that overwhelming project you’ve been putting off for months, even years – finishing your basement.

An unused basement is not only a waste of space, it’s potentially a waste of income as well! With a basement apartment, for example, you’ll have extra space for guests, in-laws, or moody teenagers, as well as a rental space to create an additional revenue stream for you and your family.

If you’re considering building an apartment in the basement, you’ve come to the right place. Listed below are a few basement transformation tips that will help you get the most out of the space beneath your home.

Let’s get started!

  1. Survey Your Space

The first, and most important, step in your basement transformation is to survey your space. In order to plan effectively, you need to know the exact amount of space you’re working with and what you need to add to your checklist.

Measure the entire basement, both the height of the room and the length of the walls. Keep in mind that, for the space to be considered liveable, your basement needs to have a minimum of 7-foot ceilings.

You’ll also need to inspect the plumbing and wiring, as you can’t have an apartment without installing them if your basement isn’t already connected to the rest of the house. Now, you’ll need a permit to complete this type of upgrade, so be sure to add that to your checklist as well.

  1. Protect Your Apartment From the Elements

Your next step should be to inspect the insulation and moisture protection. Because, as with any home, your basement apartment needs to be protected from the elements.

If the walls aren’t already insulated, you’ll need to add insulation panels and batting. This will help regulate the temperature of the apartment in addition to lowering noise from both inside and outside the space.

Moisture protection is another essential, as you might one day go downstairs to find your apartment underwater if you don’t install it. You need vapor barriers to prevent moisture from spreading through the walls and floor.

  1. Keep an Open Floorplan

When you build a suite in your basement, you only have so much space to work with, which makes it easy to unintentionally make the space feel cramped and closed-in. To combat the low square footage, it’s a good idea to keep your floorplan as open as you can.

Remember, this is meant to be a mother-in-law apartment or small rental space, it’s okay if you’re unable to separate the bedroom from the living space. There’s nothing wrong with a studio apartment!

  1. Install High-Quality Flooring

Once you have your floor plan mapped out, you’ll likely need to replace the flooring or cover the existing concrete with a higher quality flooring. Concrete isn’t the most comfortable material to walk on, but you can’t put just anything in a basement apartment.

Wood flooring, for instance, is prone to warping because of the additional moisture. With that in mind, you’ll need to go with a more sturdy option, such as tile, carpet, or engineered wood.

  1. Allow Your Furniture to Multitask

When you’re outfitting your mother-in-law apartment with furniture, look for pieces that are multi-functional or able to be stored away. Let’s use the bed as an example. A typical bed can work, but a murphy bed that folds into a desk or a platform bed with built-in drawers are better options.

Another great piece of furniture for a basement apartment is an ottoman or coffee table that can also be used as a storage space for blankets and other essentials. With the right furniture, you can include everything your renter or guest could need, regardless of the size of your basement.

  1. Plan the Kitchen With Care

It’s not a true mother-in-law suite without a kitchen area. That said, you need to plan the kitchen area with a bit of extra care, as appliances and other kitchen furniture can eat up space quickly.

Think about what you want to use your space for and what that space would need. For example, if you’re planning to rent out your basement apartment, your kitchen will need to include a few more things than a simple guest area requires.

  1. Don’t Forget Storage Space

There’s nothing more frustrating than a living space without any storage space. First of all, clutter is detrimental to both your mental and physical health. But past that, any guests or renters you have in the space will quickly become frustrated if they don’t have a place to store their belongings.

Because basement apartments have limited space, this is another area that you’ll need to plan carefully. Actual closets are best, but if you don’t have the space or budget to build them, there are alternatives. Look for storage options that go under other pieces of furniture or can be stored away when not in use.

Build the Ultimate Basement Apartment With This Guide

Though it takes a bit of time and effort, a basement apartment is a worthy addition to any home. Your in-laws will have their own space when they visit (a safe distance from you!), and when you don’t have visitors, you have the perfect Airbnb or full-time rental space.

The key is to take your time and make decisions carefully. As long as you design your apartment in the basement with yourself and your needs in mind, you can’t go wrong.

Vinyl vs Aluminum Gutters: Which Is Better for Your Home?

Gutters have a very important job! They keep water away from your home. Without them, the moisture will do a number on the structural integrity of your house.

You’ll end up paying tons of money in expensive repairs. So, if your area sees heavy rainfall (and even if it doesn’t), you can’t go without them. The question is, which ones should you get?

The common battle is vinyl vs aluminum gutters. They both have their own set of advantages and disadvantages. We can help you weigh these pros and cons so you get the best system for your home.

Don’t start shopping around until you’ve read this helpful homeowner’s guide.

What is Aluminum?

Before we get into the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of gutters, let’s talk about the materials a little. We’ll tell you out of the two materials we’re going over, aluminum gutters are the most popular.

They’re the tried and true ones that have been around since the beginning of time. Okay, maybe not that long, but they have been in existence since the 17th century or so.

There are two different types of aluminum gutters that you can choose from. Seamless and seam. The seamless gutters aren’t hard to install but they still need a professional approach.

Seam aluminum clicks into place and is so simple to install that you can do it. We’ve got a separate pros/cons list for seamless vs seam gutters that we’ll get into a little later.

What is Vinyl?

Vinyl gutters haven’t been around quite as long as aluminum ones have been. They first came into existence in the 1930s. Since they’re newer, they haven’t been able to catch up to aluminum yet, but they’re working on it.

They’re made with sturdy PVC plastic. This plastic can give it an edge on aluminum in some areas. It can also cause it to fall short in other categories.

We will say that vinyl is the easiest material to install if you’re planning on doing the process yourself to save a little money. Everything clicks right into place. It’s lightweight so, you don’t have to worry about any heavy lifting.

All those seams do have a drawback, however. You’ll be working with a lot of parts. That can get complicated fast if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Like vinyl, aluminum is lightweight. You can choose the seam option if you want to install the gutters yourself. You can also go seamless and call in a professional.

Many contractors have experience working with the material and can quickly get the job done. Not everyone has experience with vinyl materials so, it might be harder to find someone to do it.

When weighing vinyl gutter vs aluminum gutter in terms of durability, aluminum comes out on top. No matter how much it rains, the material won’t rust or buckle. It can handle snow and ice too, as long as your area doesn’t see heavy snowfall.

Too much cold weather might dent it. You might want to go with vinyl if you live in a coastal area. The salt in the air may corrode the metal.

Whereas aluminum might dent when faced with ice, vinyl will fall apart. It can’t take harsh weather at all. Since vinyl gutters have seams, it’s likely that you may suffer from a leak.

It can hold up against your everyday dents and scratches, though. As long as you don’t live in a wet climate that sees a lot of snow, your vinyl gutters can last as long as your aluminum ones. If you do see a lot of harsh weather in your area though, expect to replace your gutters after 8 years.

It’s not that hard to manufacture vinyl and again, you can install it all on your own. This makes it one of the cheapest gutter materials on the market. Vinyl doesn’t have a long lifespan. This being said, it costs more in the long run because you’ll be constantly replacing it.

Aluminum, on the other hand, has a pretty long lifespan as long as you follow the proper maintenance tips. Once it’s installed, it will be 20 years or more before you have to call someone to replace it. The material itself isn’t too expensive either.

Aluminum comes in over 20 different colors. You’re sure to find at least one that will match the look of your home. If you can’t find a good color, there are custom options available as well.

Aluminum gutters have the added benefit of the seamless option. It looks cleaner, which will do wonders for your curb appeal

Seam vs Seamless

We’ve talked a lot about seam and seamless gutters. With vinyl gutters, you don’t get a choice between the two. Aluminum comes in both options.

Seam gutters aren’t bad. They’re easy to install, but there is also a lot of potential for leaks. The seam design is also what causes vinyl gutters to buckle under the weight of snow.

Again, seamless gutters are a lot more aesthetically pleasing. It’s durable too.

Vinyl Vs Aluminum Gutters: Which is Best for Your Home?

Vinyl vs aluminum gutters. What’s the final verdict? Where they both have their own set of advantages and disadvantages, aluminum comes out on top in most categories.

That doesn’t mean that vinyl is the wrong choice. If you live in an area that doesn’t see that much bad weather, your vinyl gutters will hold up fine.

Having the right gutter system will increase your home value and make it easier to sell later. Check out the real estate section of our blog for a list of other things that will make your house pleasing to buyers.

5 Reasons to Rent a Storage Unit

Do you have too much junk in your trunks? Have you turned the garage into a personal storage unit? It’s time to free up some space in your home.

The best way to do it? Rent a storage space.

Boxing up old stuff and storing it helps you declutter and reorganize. When you declutter, you make room for more creative space. You also sleep and concentrate better when you’re not drowning in unused clutter.

This is because clutter-related anxiety makes it hard to doze off at night, which ultimately leads to insomnia.

If you have far too much clutter in your home, don’t rush and sell everything off. Instead, rent a storage unit. This is how you’ll benefit.

  1. When You Rent a Storage It Helps You Downsize

First-dates, weddings, anniversaries, and birthdays mean a lot to people. So much so that they collect memories every time these events come around.

Unfortunately, most people run out of shelf room and wall space trying to hold on to these memories. What ends up happening? Closets overfilled with bags and boxes of old stuff.

When the closets get to full, you migrate things to the garage until it fills up and you can’t park the car. When you get ready to move, you’ll realize you ten times more than what you moved in with.

Packing these excessive things up in storage helps you prepare for downsizing. You won’t have much to move when you shift to a smaller space.

  1. More Space!

Most often, people don’t realize they have a lot of space in their living areas. They spend years stuffing unused things everywhere, and they fill up usable space.

Taking advantage of a storage rental creates more space.

Move all those things you don’t use anymore, but aren’t ready to throw away, out. Watch how space opens up all over your home.

  1. A Cleaner Home

Face it! Too much stuff is just messy. A messy home leads to a dirty home.

Dust and dirt get trapped underneath boxes and bins. If you have bags of stuff cramped in closets that aren’t temperature controlled, expect mold. Moldy spots in a home cause illness through allergic reactions, breathing issues, and rashes.

Moving stuff to a rental unit exposes unclean areas in your home and encourage you to spring clean.

  1. Makes Renovation Easier

One of the main reasons renovations take longer than usual is because people have too much stuff.

Packing excess things away in a monthly rental space saves contractors a lot of time. They spend fewer man-hours moving old stuff out and more time getting the main job done.

  1. Safe Keepings

Not all homes come built with an inconspicuous safe. That leaves all those precious heirlooms, passed down through the generations, exposed.

Unless you can afford a high-tech security system, it’s safer to lock them up somewhere secure. Most storage facilities are under 24-hour surveillance security. Plus, you’re allowed to double-down on protection.

Storage facilities allow users to add additional locks and individual door alarms to their units. This gives storage users the same sense of security as having their things in a safe deposit box. Ask Inner City Moving & Storage Company for more details on that.

Box Stuff Up

For all that old stuff you have boxed up and sitting around, rent a storage space. Free up more walking room and get your house back.

Let us help you with your downsize. Check out our guides for the latest tips to tackle your next move.

Narrow Block 2-Storey home design that doesn’t compromise quality

Most people prefer buying a narrow block, but when it comes to the final house building and design, they go for something different. While it seems that outdoor and garden spaces will not be enough, narrow block homes designers can make use of the available space and incorporate various unique features that mostly seen on small and narrow blocks. The following are some of the features that are usually included:

Open plan use

Open plan use is the first feature that usually implemented on living places extension where possible to the balconies or garden areas. Smart glass can also be used to offer larger rooms’ illusion and design small or narrow block to feel large. Our minds are often tricked into thoughts that as far as our eyes can see without interruption the larger space it is.

Therefore, if you are sitting in a little room that can’t see over the oceans, you will feel the need for space. Interestingly if you are in a large room, painted with dull colors and fully enclosed, you will feel the limitation of confinement. An experienced home designer should note this sense that he can encourage the spacious principle design of narrow block designs.

Impact of Natural light

The concept of natural light can also make a massive difference. Since the narrow blocks are frequently constructed on new homes that later become the boundary of the wall to wall, natural light shouldn’t be compromised, even if it’s on the level of the ground floor. On this spot is precisely where clever positioning of the light extends vertically through the entire floor in the building.

Storage space

Another necessary inclusion is the storage space added on the way of an outdoor garden shed that is mostly unavailable in most homes. Consider using the areas below the stairwell and expand the capacity of the garage build on the cabinet storage that is available. The internal storage space is mostly preferred on every floor level for both cleaning and linen products such as brooms and vacuum cleaners.

Small and narrow block homes usually demand extra attention that is mostly delivered suitably while using home builders’ projects. Instead, the buyers may decide to use traditional home builders’ services to make sure they include open living spaces of improving views with a clever glass use and ensuring most of the light streaming in the house.

The storage space also should not compromise the natural light streaming from outside. Therefore, narrowing a lot of home designs shouldn’t feel cluttered. Narrow block home designs have been the most preferred trend for construction. However, before you engage in this type of construction, you should first seek advice from experienced builders.

The Ultimate Furnace Maintenance Checklist for Every Homeowner

As winter fast approaches, it is time to make certain you are not caught with a defective furnace!

Depending on the age of your HVAC system, a check-up by a reputable furnace repair pro should be a once or twice-a-year occasion. This will help stop potential problems before the temperature falls.

Between these visits, you can do a lot to maintain your furnace in tip-top shape, no matter whether you have an electric, gas, or oil heater.

Here’s a furnace maintenance checklist to get you started.

Replace Air Filter

This is one of the most important, and often most forgotten maintenance item for your furnace. The air filter collects dust and dirt, and if clogged, will wreak havoc on your system’s performance.

Change your air filter every three months, especially when you are using your HVAC unit often. It’s easy to do, and many filters are inexpensive.

Your furnace repair professional will be able to tell you the best type of filter for your system, most of which can be bought anywhere.

Fall and Winter Inspection

Before the winter months, you should check the following items in your furnace:

  • Ignition burners: check for dirt or corrosion, as well as strength of burn
  • Examine heat exchanger for leaks (and install carbon monoxide detectors in your home as a safety measure)
  • Make sure the flue pipe is securely attached to the furnace
  • Inspect for gas leaks with gas furnaces and assess gas pressure

Call your HVAC professional if you suspect any problems with the above checks. They can, as part of a regular maintenance package, run tests on all the above components, and correct any issues.

Other simple things you can do before the winter include:

  • Check drain pans around the unit
  • Check your thermostat to make sure it runs
  • Inspect your ductwork for leaks

Again, if you find problems, call your HVAC pro right away for service.

Springtime Inspection

In the springtime, you can again do a lot to keep your HVAC unit ready to give you some cooler air. Besides replacing the air filter and checking the thermostat, you should make sure you do the following:

  • Clean condenser, coils, and drain lines
  • Clean drain lines for proper flow and clear clogs
  • Clear drain pans
  • Inspect ducts for mold and dust
  • Change batteries in thermostat
  • Check for debris around the outside unit

Springtime is again a good time to have your HVAC pro pay a visit. Besides the above list, they can take care of maintenance issues such as:

  • Checking belts and replacing old ones
  • Checking fans, motors, and blades
  • Checking refrigerant levels
  • Lubricating all moving parts

Use This Furnace Maintenance Checklist Every Year

Now that you have the ultimate furnace maintenance checklist, consider a furnace service maintenance contract with your HVAC pro for a checkup at least once or twice a year.

Keep this checklist handy, and go through it with your pro at each visit, to ensure that your furnace will be in working order no matter what the weather!

Do I Need Flood Insurance for My Home? Your Questions Answered

No homeowner wants to deal with water damage of any kind on their property. Though leaking roofs and pipes are a problem, they pale in comparison to floods.

In fact, floods cause as much as $2 billion worth of damage each year in the United States. Worse, those floods can happen at any time.

With a comprehensive insurance policy, you’ll be able to cover the cost of any repairs after a flood. If you’re asking yourself, “do I need flood insurance for my home?” the answer might surprise you. Read on to learn the answers to the most commonly asked questions about this insurance coverage.

Do I Need Flood Insurance for My Home?

As a homeowner, you likely already have homeowners’ insurance in place to protect your home from damage. Unfortunately, that standard homeowners’ insurance policy isn’t enough to protect you from flood damage.

Most policies only provide coverage for water damage due to ruptured pipes and leaks on your property. If you file a claim after a flood, even a small one, the insurance won’t payout.

If you live in an area where floods or flash floods happen even occasionally, you need to invest in home flood insurance.

Where Can I Buy Coverage?

Luckily, finding flood insurance isn’t difficult. The best place to start is with your current insurance provider. Contact your insurance agent and let them know that you’re interested in coverage.

They’ll be able to give you a quote for flood insurance over the phone.

Though it’s tempting to buy the policy immediately, wait. Compare the price you get from your current agency and shop around. Just make sure you work with an established company.

Remember, your insurance coverage is only worth the investment if the insurance provider will pay you for the damage your property experiences. Choosing a reputable company is the best way to guarantee that you’ll get the compensation you deserve.

How Much Coverage Do I Need?

When you buy any type of insurance, you need to make sure you have enough coverage in place to fully pay for the necessary repairs. Think about how much your home is worth and how much the items you have inside would cost to replace in full.

Then, discuss those concerns with your insurance agent and let them recommend the best coverage amount for your home’s needs.

Keep in mind that the more coverage you buy, the more expensive the insurance will be. Make sure you’re able to afford the premiums before you agree to your coverage limits.
